Jean Reinhardt (23 January 1910 – 16 May 1953) stage name Django Reinhardt (French: or ), was a Belgian-born Romani-French jazz guitarist and composer, regarded as one of the greatest musicians of the twentieth century. He was the first jazz talent to emerge from Europe and remains the most significant. With violinist Stéphane Grappelli, Reinhardt formed the Paris-based Quintette du Hot Club de France in 1934.

A second volume of Django Reinhardt issued by the Fuel label features American Popular Songs, for the most part, over 16 tracks. There's a good dose of swing, blues, a little boogie-woogie, bolero-tinged music and straight-ahead standards as you would expect. The best single cut might be "Air Mail Special," while the tail-end of the CD has some basic Reinhardt originals like "Impromptu," "Just for Fun," and "Blues.

**** recommended. As with most Everest anthologies, the liner notes on this album provide general bio information about the artist and the same specific information about transferring the music from 78s, and nothing about the selections housed on the album. But if you just want to listen to good music (or enjoy research or have a huge Django knowledge in your brain), this is a worthwhile grab. The sound retains some of the charm of the original 78s--just enough in my opinion--and the sides selected are quite incredible. My research shows that many of these recordings come from the 1940s--which is true of much of Django's offerings. This is essential listening for fans of guitar music, gypsy jazz, music of the 40s, or anybody with a love for good music.-- winch (Winch Records: only the good ones...the good, the odd, and the wonderful.)
