I'm proud to announce the release of my latest CD Hellbent. The recording captures some of New York City's finest contemporary jazz artists at their very best. Joining me are Steven Bernstein (trumpet), Marcus Rojas (tuba) and G. Calvin Weston (drums). Hellbent began performing in NYC in 2006 and instantly caught the attention of artistic programmers in Europe. The band has performed in NYC, Vancouver, Seattle and Italy. They debuted at Brooklyn’s Barbes as a trio with Calvin Weston on drums and Marcus Rojas on tuba. The audience’s appreciation at the end of the second song, 1. minutes into the album is a shocking recognition that this is a particular place, an event. Like Father, Like Son is so heartfelt, so expressive, so on target, fathers and sons are us.

Michael Lennox Blake (July 5, 1945 – May 2, 2015) was an American author, best known for the film adaptation of his novel Dances with Wolves, for which he won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Early in his life, Blake's family lived in Texas, before moving to Southern California, where they moved frequently. He began writing when he was stationed at Walker Air Force Base, where he wrote for the base newspaper

But that's not really what Michael Blake and his Hellbent band are about. Younger players, especially, are able to combine odd rhythms and complicated forms and really, really delve into some interesting things, says the Vancouver-born saxophonist, on the line from his Brooklyn home. With us, it's more about songs, and the freedom of improvisation. It reminds me a little bit of Hot Rats, the Frank Zappa album-it sounds like the violin on that. Most importantly, though, Burnham fits in with the other Hellbent players' penchant for spirited interplay. With these guys, they're all such strong personalities that I don't really see myself leading, Blake admits. They're playing my music, and certainly we have a specific kind of road map that I provide. But if I try to control the conversation, I don't think it leads to the best results, musically.
