This song is by Marlene Dietrich and appears on the album Souvenir Album (1950). This song is a cover of "Lili Marleen" by Lale Andersen. Devant la caserneQuand le jour s'enfuitLa vieille lanterneSoudain s'allume et luitC'est dans ce coin là que le soirOn s'attendait remplis d'espoirTous deux, Lili MarlèneTous deux, Lili Marlène.
Marlene Dietrich's recording career spanned sixty years, from 1928 until 1988. She introduced the songs "Falling in Love Again (Can't Help It)" (from the film The Blue Angel) and "See What the Boys in the Back Room Will Have" (from "Destry Rides Again"). She first recorded her version of "Lili Marlene" in 1945. Her first long-playing album was Marlene Dietrich Overseas, was a prestige success for Columbia Records in 1950.
With me, Lili Marleen. Give me a rose to show how much you care. Tie to the stem a lock of golden hair. Surely tomorrow, you'll feel blue. But then will come a love that's new. For you, Lili Marleen. When we are marching in the mud and cold. And when my pack seems more than I can hold. My love for you renews my might. I'm warm again, my pack is light. It's you, Lili Marleen. It is correct, that the title of this English version is "Lili Marlene", not "Lili Marleen". The lyrics, however, are not written by Tommie Connor, but written by Marlene Dietrich herself. The Tommie Connor lyrics must be that "Lily of the lamplight"- version. You've made a cross-reference to Lale Andersen.
Marlene Dietrich did her wartime part working the USO circuit and cutting American standards in German to irritate the Third Reich faithful. Having surmised them to be some of Dietrich's best sides, arranger Mitch Miller convinced her to re-record them while at Columbia in 1959.
