This album is included in the following sets: COATES, BLECH Wagner: The Potted Ring, Vol. 3 (1926-31) - PACO118. By the time Victor issued their first Siegfried set, several sides had been re-recorded with Melchior, and these were chosen for the American release, although the abridged final scene with Laubenthal and Leider was retained. Eventually, Melchior recorded the complete scene; and since that appears in Volume 2 of our series, these duplicated earlier sides are presented here.

Andante - Allegro ma non troppo by Wiener Philharmoniker and Sir Georg Solti. The Siegfried Idyll is here recorded in the chamber like version written by the composer as a birthday treat for his wife and played at the foot of his home stairway. This too is an intimate performance and makes a surprisingly perfect partner for the Schubert. The symphony must be considered the major work on the disc even though there are those amongst the collecting fraternity who would describe the Idyll as the most ideal yet recorded. The Siegfried Idyll that serves as a filler is quite magical, one of Solti's very best efforts. 4 people found this helpful.
