Fred Lonberg-Holm (born 1 October 1962 in Delaware) is an American cellist based in Chicago. He relocated from New York City to Chicago in 1995. Lonberg-Holm is most identified with playing free improvisation and free jazz. He is also a composer of concert works. Lonberg-Holm currently leads the Valentine Trio, with Jason Roebke (bass) and Frank Rosaly (drums)

Biography by Joslyn Layne. Cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm is a veteran of the NYC downtown avant-garde scene who is now based in Chicago.
Cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm is one of Chicago's staunchest advocates of free improvisation, but throughout his lengthy career he's also engaged with various pop modes. Groups such as Valentine Trio and Stirrup (his current band with band with bassist Nick Macri and drummer Charles Rumback) have braided together rigorous improvisation and richly melodic song forms. Earlier this year Seval released its third album, Fragile (Found You), which the press materials identified as the ensemble's swan song: "The members of the group continue to work in various groups both separately and together, but. this particular constellation has burned ou. Seval vocalist Sofia Jernberg especially has found herself in increased demand, because her skill at interpreting notated new-music works matches her improvisational ingenuity.

Then again, Weasel Walter, Fred Lonberg-Holm and Jim O'Rourke (who perform here under the names Necrodevourer, Sado-Immolator, and Lycanthrovampire, respectively) have never been the types to let trivialities like convention or reason stand in their way. Paying tribute to noise music poses a lot of the same difficulties as writing about i. Lonberg-Holm tears spastically at his cello like an epileptic at a Japanese cartoon convention. Walter wails on his drums the way you know he would on every Flying Luttenbachers record were he not held back by structure. The piece quiets down briefly around the 14-minute mark, as Lonberg-Holm presents a new theme for the group to tear to shreds. It slows down again two-thirds of the way through, allowing O'Rourke a solo, wherein he masterfully molds feedback in much the same way he might mold a melody on one of his more commercial albums.
