The Great Memphis Sound easily stands out from its two predecessors, as it refrains from novelties inspired by a certain sailor man. Well intended instrumental versions of jazz and popular standards are also kept at a minimum. In its place are the tightly locked groove of "Grab This Thing" and "Philly Dog," their slightly speeded up version of Rufus Thomas' "The Do. The latter managed to return them to the Top 20 of the R&B charts and rounded off a James Brown medley, which works quite well as a showcase for the Memphis Horns.

Back to Back is a live album by the Mar-Keys and Booker T & the . s, released on Stax Records in 1967. It features both groups playing live on the Stax/Volt package tour of Europe. The album peaked at number 98 on the Billboard 200 album chart in the United States. Philly Dog", "Grab This Thing", and "Last Night" are performed by the Mar-Keys (. Booker T. & the . s plus the horn section of Wayne Jackson, Joe Arnold and Andrew Love). All other songs are performed by Booker T. & the MG's alone.
The Mar-Keys, formed in 1958, were an American studio session band for Stax Records, in Memphis, Tennessee, in the 1960s. As the first house band for the label, their backing music formed the foundation for the early 1960s Stax sound. The group began as The Royal Spades while its members were in high school.
