Giacomo Puccini was born in Lucca December 22, 1858 by a family of four generations is dedicated to music, both on the paternal than maternal. His father, Michael (1813-1864) died when James was just over five years, and the musical education of the boy is entrusted to the maternal uncle Fortunato Magi, then Carlo Angeloni, both alumni of the father. Following the family tradition, Puccini became a chorister (1868), then organist (1872); and in this capacity he is also active as a composer early. Puccini returned to Lucca, where he began living with Elvira Bonturi, wife of the grocer Narciso Gemignani, who will marry only in 1904. Tosca Opera in three acts, libretto by Victorien Sardou, Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa from the play La Tosca (1887) by Victorien Sardou first performance: Rome, Teatro Costanzi, 14 January 1900.
Tosca by Giacomo Puccini libretto (Italian English). Floria Tosca, celebre cantante (soprano) Mario Cavaradossi, pittore (tenore) Il Barone Scarpia, capo della polizia (baritono) Cesare Angelotti (basso) Il Sagrestano (basso) Spoletta, agente di polizia (tenore) Sciarrone, Gendarme (basso) Un carceriere (basso) Un pastore (voce bianca). Floria Tosca, a celebrated singer - soprano Mario Cavaradossi, a painter - tenor Baron Scarpia, chief of police - baritone Cesare Angelotti, former Consul of the Roman Republic - bass A Sacristan - baritone Spoletta, a police agent - tenor.
Tosca was a passion project of Puccini's. He was immediately drawn to the original play by Victorien Sardou, which the critics had panned for its excessive melodrama and violence but the wider public adored. Puccini had to persuade Alberto Franchetti and librettist Luigi Illica to give up their adaptation of the play and pass the project to him instead. Sardou, who retained final say over the adaptation, and Puccini's own librettist Giuseppe Giacosa worked under almost constant protest against the maestro's creative vision. To Tosca horror, however, a real execution takes place the following morning. Heartbroken and facing charges for Scarpia's murder, the young woman throws herself off the castle walls. The intense drama and action which permeate Tosca draw the audience in, and those in attendance at the Gran Teatro Giacomo Puccini will dive into the atmosphere of 19th-century Rome instantly.
