hloroethane, commonly known as DDT, is a colorless, tasteless, and almost odorless crystalline chemical compound, an organochlorine, originally developed as an insecticide, and ultimately becoming infamous for its environmental impacts. DDT's insecticidal action was discovered by the Swiss chemist Paul Hermann Müller in 1939.
DDT, sprayed on the walls of houses, is an organochlorine that has been used to fight malaria since the 1950s. Recent policy statements by the World Health Organization have given stronger support to this approach. However, DDT and other organochlorine pesticides have been banned in most countries worldwide because of their persistence in the environment and human toxicity. For example, canola oil and baking soda have pesticidal applications and are considered biopesticides. Biopesticides fall into three major classes
Its effectiveness as an insecticide, however, was only discovered in 1939. Shortly thereafter, particularly during World War II, the . began producing large quantities of DDT for control of vector-borne diseases such as typhus and malaria abroad. DDT exports increased from 12 percent of the total production in 1950 to 67 percent in 1969. However, exports have shown a marked decrease in recent years dropping from approximately 70 million pounds in 1970 to 35 million in 1972.
2) rotectants (PIPs) are pesticidal substances that plants produce from genetic material that has been added to the plant. For example, scientists can take the gene for the Bt pesticidal protein, and introduce the gene into the plant's own genetic material. Then the plant, instead of the Bt bacterium, manufactures the substance that destroys the pest. The protein and its genetic material, but not the plant itself, are regulated by EPA.
Section 5. Non-pesticidal interventions. But interest in developing non-pesticidal ap-proaches has been growing especially as mosquitoes have developed resistance to DDT and malathion. 79 FFS training was established in Sri Lanka in 1995, providing practical field-based sessions with groups of rice farmers (Figure 12).
DDT is a controversial pesticide that has been banned in many countries. Find out more about its history and negative effect on living creatures. DDT, also known as ichloroethane, belongs to a class of pesticides known as organochlorides. A synthetic chemical compound that must be made in a laboratory (it doesn't occur in nature), DDT is a colorless, crystalline solid. DDT can't be dissolved in water; it is, however, easily dissolved in organic solvents, fats, or oils. As a result of its tendency to dissolve in fats, DDT can build up in the fatty tissues of animals that are exposed to it.
