For to Next followed Steve Hillage's last effort by a few years, and during the interim the evolving synth/new wave scene seems to have captured his imagination. Gone is Hillage's upbeat mysticism, replaced by the fashionably bleak outlook popularized by synth rock acts like Ultravox, Visage, and Gary Numan.

Stephen Simpson Hillage (born 2 August 1951) is an English musician, best known as a guitarist. He is associated with the Canterbury scene and has worked in experimental domains since the late 1960s. Besides his solo recordings he has been a member of Gong, Khan and System 7. Hillage was born in Chingford, then in Essex. Whilst still at school, he joined his first band, a blues rock band called Uriel, with Dave Stewart, Mont Campbell and Clive Brooks.

This limited double set of Steve Hillage's two 1983 records eventually became the standard configuration of this set, with CD releases typically combining the two brief New nced albums onto one disc. That's not a terrible way to approach this stuff, since the records are two sides of the same coin. Both are built on Hillage and Miquette Giraudy putting down a New Wave-ish synth line and Hillage delivering some of his guitar work on it; the major difference is that And Not Or is more d, whereas For To Next is more song- oriented.

Steve Hillage’s tenure in Gong was relatively brief, from 1973-5, but with them the young guitarist came into his own as a player. For To Next reached number 48 in the UK charts and features some typical ’80s keyboard sounds. But Hillage and Giraudy’s use of electronic drums and synthetics was also prescient of the ambient techno music they would be making at the end of the decade. They have pursued that tack with System 7 and Mirror System until the present day, although there has always been room for some sweet guitar work.

Steve Hillage’s full Omty, from Fish Rising to System 7 with bells, whistles, books – and a badge to. Instead he continued to paddle his own canoe, and that early promise was not misplaced. Over the next 40 years he delivered guitar heroics that put many so-called guitar heroes to shame, beautifully crafted songs draped with gorgeous melodies and peppered with shit-kicking riffs such as on The Salmon Song and the aptly named The Glorious Om Riff, on a raft of gem-studded solo albums. Right from the beginning he hit a purple patch that went from Fish Rising in 1975 to the particularly melodic and entrancing Green in ’78.
