Exile in Guyville is the debut album by American indie rock singer-songwriter Liz Phair. It was released in June 1993 to widespread critical and commercial success, and it was ranked at 327 by Rolling Stone in its 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list. As of July 2010, the album had sold 491,000 copies. The album is considered a landmark album that changed indie music entirely by paving the way for more female singer/songwriters like Fiona Apple and Cat Power.

Girly-Sound - the name of a series of three cassettes Liz Phair released after graduating from Oberlin in 1990 - is essential to Phair's legacy, the music that led her to her 1993 breakthrough, Exile in Guyville. Despite its centrality, the songs were doled out slowly, either re-recorded for Exile or its sequels, Whip-Smart and gg, or appearing as B-sides or bonus tracks as late as the 15th Anniversary reissue of her debut in 2008

Girly-Sound to Guyville is something much more revealing than an anniversary commemoration. It's a document of an artist finding and raising er voice: a souvenir from an era that questions long-held assumptions about the sex and the business of rock'n'roll. Phair mobilized and rearranged some tunes from her Girly-Sound tapes. Almost all of them improve with Guyville’s studio polish, but a couple are better in their original form. Exile in Guyville remains her most visible and memorable record, but it’s more than a time capsule of early-nineties indie rock. Its most compelling songs (and there are a bunch of them) still generate tensions, among a voice and its bodily contours and the public’s articulations of femininity.

On May 4, Matador Records is releasing a box set of early Liz Phair material, titled Girly-Sound to Guyville. It features the singer/songwriter’s acclaimed debut album, Exile In Guyville, which turns 25 this year, as well as her self-released Girly-Sound tapes, Yo Yo Buddy Yup Yup Word To Ya Mutha, Girls! Girls! Girls! and Sooty. The 7xLP box set also features an oral history of Exile in Guyville, featuring interviews with Phair, Casey Rice, Brad Wood, Gerald Cosloy and Chris Brokaw among others, as well as an essay from Phair, an essay from critic Ann Powers, unreleased photos and more

Liz Phair’s seminal album Exile In Guyville was released 25 years ago this May. To celebrate, the legendary singer-songwriter and guitarist will reissue the album in a box set, Girly-Sound To Guyville, on its anniversary via Matador Records.
