Piano Concerto No. 5. This concerto was finalized in 1809, about the same time as the famous sonata Appasionata op. 57. The powerful themes and heroic note of the composition, lead to the name Emperor for this concerto. The name Emperor dates from Beethoven’s time but was not given by Beethoven himself.

The Piano Concerto No. 5 in E♭ major, Op. 73, by Ludwig van Beethoven, popularly known as the Emperor Concerto, was his last completed piano concerto. It was written between 1809 and 1811 in Vienna, and was dedicated to Archduke Rudolf, Beethoven's patron and pupil.

Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Hans Knappertsbusch, Clifford Curzon & Clifford Curzon, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Hans Knappertsbusch. Klavierkonzert No. 4 In E-Flat Major: Adagio Un Poco.

The Concerto No. 5 in E flat major for Piano and Orchestra, composed in 1809 at the time of Napoleon’s siege and occupation of Vienna, was Ludwig van Beethoven’s last work in this form. The heroic optimism at the heart of the Concerto finds expression in the majesty of its design and the innovative virtuosity of the solo part. The dialect between piano and orchestra creates an electric atmosphere of brooding depth and sweeping grandeur.
