Franz Ignaz Beck (Mannheim, February 20, 1734 – Bordeaux, December 31, 1809) was a German violinist, composer, conductor and music teacher who spent the greater part of his life in France, where he became director of the Bordeaux Grand Théâtre. Possibly the most talented pupil of Johann Stamitz, Beck is an important representative of the second generation of the so-called Mannheim school. 3-5. La Stagione, Frankfurt am Main, Michael Schneider, CPOSymphonies op. 3, No. The Seasons, Frankfurt am Main, Michael Schneider, CPO), it seems that some symphonies do have four movements as well as a minuet; as for the symphonies of Stamitz, some do not have a minuet and have only three movements. The symphonies Op. 1 are scored for string orchestra; in Op. 2, No. 1 (Callen 7) in addition to the strings two French horns are demanded; op.

Beck's symphonies are strikingly advanced for their time; he was already utilizing four-movement structures by 1760, and his symphonies are rich with the violent contrasts and explosive effects associated with the Stürm und Drang phase found in Haydn's middle symphonies and those of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.

The five major-key symphonies on the Naxos disc are less distinctive, though several movements reveal Beck’s typical wayward streak – the opening Allegro molto of the G major, for instance, where eerie unisons suddenly interrupt the music’s lusty triple-time swing. The faster movements are predominantly cheerful Italianate pieces, short on memorable ideas but long on animated bustle, with frequent repetition of brief motifs, sometimes as echo effects. The first movement of the E major Sinfonia, Op. 13 No. 1, with its opening cuckoo calls, has more than a whiff of Vivaldi – a reminder that Beck studied in Venice.
