Banish Misfortune Original recording. Malcolm Dalglish Format: Vinyl. Dalglish's hammered dulcimer work is light and shimmering, retaining a strong rhythmic pulse without any machine-like qualities while Larsen, on a wide range of instruments, compliments his partner superbly and shines on some features for flute and tin whistle. Dalglish would go on to achieve some degree of notoriety in more new agey circles, but this early recording captures him before any treacle or gauziness had set in. Product details.

Malcolm Dalglish (born August 14, 1952) is an American hammered dulcimer player and builder, composer, and choral director. A virtuoso performer on the hammer dulcimer, he is a former member of the folk/Celtic trio Metamora and has performed frequently with the percussionist Glen Velez. In addition to the dulcimer, Dalglish also plays the spoons and bones (both traditional American percussion instruments). He also composes prolifically for choir, and many of his compositions are for choir with dulcimer accompaniment.

Malcolm Dalglish & Grey Larsen The classic, debut album (1977). Instrumental Irish, North-umbrian, and Hebridean, with originals by Grey and Malcolm. Has sold over 80,000 copies. Malcolm Dalglish & Grey Larsen Follow-up to Banish Misfortune, adding American music and vocals. With three Dalglish originals, notably the song Shake These Bones. Malcolm Dalglish & Grey Larsen Many consider this a classic. Instrumentals from Ireland, the US, France, Belgium, Greece, plus originals. Guest include Kevin Burke, Micheál O Domhnaill and Triona Ni Dhomhnaill.

The slide Road To Lisdoonvarna was popularized on this side of the pond (the States) by Grey Larsen (b. 1955) & Malcolm Dalglish (b. 1952), on their album Banish Misfortune (1977). They played this tune in a set of four: The Road to Lisdoonvarna/Trip to Sligo/Dennis Murphy’s Slide/O’Keefe’s Slide, where the first and last tunes are very similar two-parters played in Edor - certainly in the same melodic family.

Banish Misfortune is a rare example of a couple of fellows who are . born yet manage to re-create an ethnic music (Irish, in this case) without any pretension or condescension, simply by playing in an honest and strong manner. They work through a number of traditional pieces as well as several scattered original compositions and perform them with heartfelt grace and gleeful straightforwardness, never grandstanding or "overdoing" the Irishness.
