Letters from Iraq: Oud and String Quintet, 2017. Letter 1. Eastern Love – Sinan, 06:54. Unspoken Word – Laila, 06:17. Fly Home – Fatima, 08:36. Drawing from his memories of life in Iraq under Saddam’s rule, and from the stories and experiences recounted to him by people in his native country following the . invasion, Alhaj has created a series of compositions based on a fusion of Arabic and Western classical music, mixing his oud playing with a string quartet drawn primarily from the New Mexico. The pigeons wheel overhead, lost now that their home has been destroyed as well. It’s a beautifully tragic moment, evoked perfectly by oud and violin lines and made more powerful for its ordinary humanity in the face of great violence. One of the most powerful compositions, Running Boy, tells the story of Alhaj’s nephew, born prematurely with underdeveloped legs.

Born in Baghdad, Rahim AlHaj is a master of the oud-a stringed instrument with a history unfurling back 5,000 years. Music has been a constant in his life throughout his years as an Iraqi, a political refugee, and now an American citizen. In this performance, AlHaj and the Kontras Quartet with Christopher Polen (bass) will play his composition created from the text of actual letters-letters expressing the emotions of Iraqis living in their war-torn country-transposed into eight gripping compositions. Event Sponsors: Little Village. AlHaj will be bringing his oud, Arabian percussion and a string quartet to Hancher Auditorium to play songs from his stirring new album Letters from Iraq (Released in April 2017 via Smithsonian Folkways). The eight gripping tracks are intricate musical interpretations from actual handwritten letters by citizens of Iraq.
