Album: Ilse Werner, 1989.

Ilse Werner (born Ilse Charlotte Still on 11 July 1921 in Batavia, Dutch East Indies (now Jakarta, Indonesia); died 8 August 2005 in Lübeck) was an actress and singer. She was born to a Dutch father and a German mother and was a Dutch citizen by birth. Although she had her greatest successes in Germany (mainly during the time of the Third Reich), she did not assume German citizenship until 1955.
Ilse Werner was born Ilse Charlotte Still to . Still, a Dutch trader/plantation owner, and German mother Lilly Werner on 11 July 1921, in Batavia, Dutch East Indies. She lived there until 1931, when her family moved to Germany. Her breakthrough came the following year, she starred in "Wunschkonzert," a tale surrounding a real German radio show in which Wehrmacht soldiers made song requests. Ilse played the center of a love triangle between two Luftwaffe flyers (naturally flying together in the same bomber) vying for her affections, with everybody putting duty above love and cheering the "beautiful future" in a very disciplined Germanic fashion. There was no hiding the grim fact that the war wasn't going well, so heroic tales of U-boats turned into films like "Große Freiheit Nr. 7" (English title "Port of Freedom"), another love-triangle film.
After the beginning of WW II, German radio starts broadcasting the "Wunschkonzert für die Wehrmacht" - a program made of wishes from the soldiers. He hears the song, he wanted to hear, and so does Inge. This one actually isn't one of them: Ilse Werner, a wonderful and fresh actress who appeared on many great Helmut Käutner films (and a musical star as well) is quite wasted and doesn't get to sing a note. Why she chooses the immensely ugly (though sometimes very talented) Carl Raddatz over the wonderful boyish Joachim Brennecke, is a total mystery. If you want a love story, there's "Under the bridges", "Grosse Freiheit nr 7" or "Romanze in Moll". If you just want to see Nazi uniforms and stock footage - well, there always are documentaries, such as the amazing series "Third Reich in colour".
