Katch 22 - Diary of a Blackman Living in the Land of the Lost

Welcome to the land of the lost, where your life is the price and the ultimate cost. It’s necessary that you understand no demands will be made. I live in the West, a descendant of the slave trade, played and betrayed constantly by my own kind. Your bubble-head values dilutes my bloodline. I’m lowly paid and made to live in a mould. Lost and you don’t give a damn. It’s just a page from the diary of a blackman. Katch 22 – Cynical World (Lyrics). Sir Beans OBE & MC Kelz – Sagittarius Sound System.

Land of the Living is the title track of Matthew Perryman Jones’s 4th studio album in 2012. You cannot love in moderation Dancing with a dead man's bones Lay your soul On the threshing floor Between the walls of the river Shoulders bare the sacred stones We made it alive We are not alone Kiss the ground And change your name. You cannot love in moderation You're dancing with a dead man's bones Lay your soul On the threshing floor I heard the distant battle drum The mockingbird spoke in tongues Longing for the day to come I set my face, forsook my fears I saw the city through my tears The darkness soon will disappear And be swallowed

Gadar
When it came out, I read a rave review in a British magazine called Hip Hop Connection. It was as good as the critic suggested. I taped the record and it nearly fitted onto one side of a 90 minute cassette. My tape recorder had the automatic function of eight times rewinding and playing that side again. I was addicted then to a computer game called Dark Castle. After the tape recorder stopped I realized I had wasted an enormous amount of time, but in the company of a beautiful record: "We have come from pyramid builders to council tenants." (To be frank I was neither of the two.)Strong voices making valid and socially poignant statements embedded in richly textured soundscapes: "Too many Big Daddy Kane sound-a-likes ..." The typical lean and sometimes even negligent production characteristic of UK hip hop, but then again Organized Konfusion's eponymous debut had a similarly muddled and murky sound at the time and nobody slagged them off for that.
