Dig It! is a jazz album by The Red Garland Quintet, recorded in 1957 and 1958 but not released until 1962 on the Prestige label as PRLP 7229. Harvey Pekar wrote in the December 6, 1962 issue of Down Beat magazine that "This Lp is another in the series of excellent informal sessions Garland and Coltrane made for Prestige in the late '50s. Billie's Bounce" (Charlie Parker) – 9:24. Crazy Rhythm" (Irving Caesar, Joseph Meyer, Roger Wolfe Kahn) – 3:26.
Album The Divine Liturgy of the Wretched Exiles. Dust and mud comin through my pores Can't find God in the department stores So I hit the road with a shovel and a song See if i can dig it up before I'm gone. Here comes Jesus come to free us Hear poor Wall Street crashin' at His feet (Dig it up, keep on movin', dig it up, dig it up, walk on). Can only take fence sitting for so long Circulation loss says my heart was wrong I once was lost but now I'm found And everything meaningful is underground
We're honoured to have an unreleased track on it: The Creeping Hen. So comb that comb, smoothen those wattles, then tune in to RnaG from 10pm to 12am all week.
Taken from "scraps" or "leftovers" of three different sessions, Dig It! presents distinct sides of Red Garland's straight-ahead jazz persona that manifests in trio, quartet, and quintet formats. One track was issued as led by drummer Art Taylor (Taylor's Wailers), ostensibly John Coltrane in Garland's quartet apart from their association with Miles Davis, and two separate recordings have trumpeter Donald Byrd added to comprise a five-piece combo.
