David West is the kind of musician who needs to have more than one iron in the fire to be satisfied. The very busy Australian's past projects have included stints in bands that played noisy punk rock (Burning Sensations), angular post-punk (Rank/Xerox), and electropop (Lace Curtains). Most notably, he was a member of Total Control, a noise rock supergroup of sorts that released the excellent Typical System album. Night School Records released the project's self-titled debut in early 2016. That same year, West finished work on his first official solo album, the almost straightforwardly poppy Peace or Love, on Tough Love Records. After taking a quick break from flooding the market with albums, West returned with another Rat Columns record, Candle Power, which was released by Upset the Rhythm in March of 2017.

Peace and Love is the fourth studio album by The Pogues, released in July 1989. Peace and Love continued the band's gradual departure from traditional Irish music. It noticeably opens with a heavily jazz-influenced track. Also, several of the songs are inspired by the city in which the Pogues were founded, London ("White City", "Misty Morning, Albert Bridge", "London You're a Lady"), as opposed to Ireland, from which they had usually drawn inspiration.

This album was released as a double-LP, which was composed of some live material recorded at Bill Graham's Fillmore East and some studio recordings. In "Love, Peace and Happiness", the phrase "That's one small step for a man, a giant leap for mankind" is paraphrased as, "It's a small step for man, but it's a giant leap for all mankind".
