The term "alternative" didn't really become prominent until the very end of the '80s, and into the early '90s. As long as the song is a key album track or represents a major song in the artist's repertoire, it need not have had a physical single release. There were nearly 400 songs on the initial list of potential candidates for inclusion, and narrowing that to 100 involved cuts that were heartbreaking. The concept of a bullet playing the role of God, the ultimate arbiter of life and death, is as relevant as ever as America continues to struggle in the grip of a gruesome spree of mass shootings.
From jangly indie to dark, sexy alt-rock, the 80s was the decade when there really was an alternative to the mainstream. Back in the mid-80s, ‘indie’ was a confusing thing: not a style of music, just an abbreviation. Literally short for ‘independent’, the ‘indie charts’ would be topped by the Jesus And Mary Chain one week (then signed to fledgling indie label Creation) and Kylie Minogue the week after (she was on the rather more established indie label PWL).

Best album and album cover of the 80s! Madonna was at her pinnacle with true blue. What Purple Rain ain't here!?! 8 The Number of the Beast - Iron Maiden. Maiden's best album is inarguably one of the decade's finest . Sadly it couldn't out-perform its predecessor "thriller" due to various non-musical factors. Thriller is overrated. This album set a new standard for Michael. He even wrote a large portion of the songs himself and produced almost all the tracks.
Ultimate Alternative Wavers is the first full-length album released by indie rock band Built to Spill. The line-up consisted of Doug Martsch on guitar and vocals, Brett Netson on guitar and bass, and Ralf Youtz on drums, although there was some variation in instrumentation on a few tracks. The album was recorded at Audio Lab in Boise, Idaho in the fall of 1992, and released in 1993 on the C/Z Records label. It eventually went out-of-print, but was re-released in late 2006.
