Vintage: The Very Best of Moby Grape is a retrospective collection of Moby Grape songs, many previously unreleased, originally issued in 1993 as part of Columbia Records' "Rock Artifacts" series. Included in the collection was the entire eponymous first album of the group, generally considered to be one of the most important albums of its era. Noted rock critic David Fricke wrote the liner notes to the compilation. Hey Grandma" (Miller, Stevenson) 2:45. Mr. Blues" (Mosley) 2:00.
It's hard to imagine a better-produced package of Moby Grape's work than this two-disc, 48-track condensation of their best late-'60s recordings. The first disc of this set centers around their entire 1967 self-titled debut LP (included in its entirety), which mixed blues, country, and folk influences with hard-charging psychedelic rock & roll. The result was one of the Summer of Love's more enduring works. The second disc boils their wildly inconsistent 1968-69 material down to a fairly strong and coherent selection.

Vintage Grape contains the entire first album that's so expensive now, plus most, if not all, of WOW, '69, and a couple cuts from Truly Fine Citizen. So, it's not complete. You really do need to hear the Truly Fine Citizen version of "Looper" along with all of the songs they did on that disc. Despite what you may have heard about TFC, it is essential! I think Grape Jam kind of sucks (just a bunch of repetitive bluesy jams), but you'll want that album eventually; it's completely missing from here. I have a soft spot for this band, especially the first album, which was one of the seminal psyche- rock albums of 1967. I bought this because it seemed like the best deal for getting the first album, which is frankly all I was interested in. I figured the extras might be fun for a spin as well. Well, I got the first album, but many of the tracks have as much as 1:00 of chatter and false starts before the tune starts.

This is the US pressing of this title which had a very short life due to litigation arising over the Moby Grape name and catalog.
The actual title of track 11, disc 2 should be "If You Can't Learn From My Mistakes".
All tracks are the original mixes with the exception of the previously unreleased tracks (Disc 1, tracks 8, 15-21 and 24 and disc 2, tracks 2, 11 & 23) which are represented in new mixes. "Hey Grandma" and "Omaha" have been extended.
2-24b and c are hidden tracks which appear after a minute of silence after the last listed track.
Several cuts have studio banter attached to them.
Producer's Note:
Except where noted, the material on this set was digitally transferred from original producer David Rubinson's 2-track stereo masters. As a result of his vision and experimentation (i.e.: purposely placing the background vocals out of phase, thereby successfully achieving a unique spaciousness in the mix), some of the earlier cuts will not be entirely mono compatible. We have included the tracks "Omaha" and "Hey Grandma" in their original mono mix form as well.

"The Grape were the kind of do-it-all combo to come along only once or twice in a rock 'n' roll generation..." - David Fricke, Rolling Stone
"The Very Best of Moby Grape is clearly the rock reissue of the year, if not the decade." - Steve Simels, Stereo Review
"Like wow, man." - A fan
This release also carries a "Parental Advisory - Explicit Lyrics" sticker, although this owes to the included "outrageous studio banter" and not any of the lyrics themselves.
This release is identified as belonging to the "Rock Artifacts" series.
