Per Nørgård: Secret Melodies. Nørgård is not afraid of repetition and the use of extended ostinatos, but he is clearly not a minimalist - the repeated patterns are part of a larger scheme that ultimately sounds more kaleidoscopic than systematic. In Unendlicher Empfang (1997), for two pianos and four metronomes, the music builds to a kind of frenetic speed and level of complexity that brings Nancarrow to mind, and Achilles and the Tortoise echoes similar irrational rhythmic relations that are hugely demanding for the performer but thoroughly engaging for the listener.

Per Nørgård (pronounced ; born 13 July 1932) is a Danish composer. Nørgård was born in Gentofte, Denmark. He studied with Vagn Holmboe at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, and subsequently with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. To begin with, he was strongly influenced by the Nordic styles of Jean Sibelius, Carl Nielsen and Vagn Holmboe

Dan Styffe is also joined by highly rated violinist Peter Herresthal on two works for violin and double-bass, Olav Anton Thommessen’s Lyrical Duet, and Per Nørgård’s melodic fragments Secret Voices, a work originally written for viola with the title La melodia segreta, in an arrangement by the cellist Jakob Kullberg.

Secret Voices (2004). Baseret på "Sonata - The secret melody', første del af 'Libro per Nobuko'. The name of the sonata in five movements is LA MELODIA SEGRETA (THE SECRET MELODY)". The title is borrowed from a book by Trinh Xuan Thuan, the Vietnamese astrophysicist. The five movements of the sonata circumscribe a hidden melody: a clear melodic shape appears often enough, but it soon reveals itself as being part of another, superior melody - and so on.
