Love Ritual doesn't seem to care and offers more truthful look at some of Green's edgier, left-of-center work. The hypnotic title track with its sharp rhythm and often incoherent lyrics is made even more striking and emotional due to the string arrangement. The harder edged "I Gotta Be More (Take Me Higher)" and "Let It Shine" sounded better here than they did on their original albums. During this time frame, Green's voice remained intact even when his confidence and attention span seemed to waver. Love Ritual was released after Hi Records switched distribution from London to Cream. Although the motives for this release still remain unclear, Love Ritual does offer a good array of Green's hits, grazes, and misses.

Al Green: Love Ritual: Rare and Previously Unreleased 1968-1976 Cut one wild night in early 1975, the polyrhythmic title track was hot enough to lead Al Green Is Love and lend its name to a misbegotten 1978 compilation before Colin Escott ever dreamed of remixing it, but that's not to say it isn't even wilder with strings censored. Willie Mitchell was no fool-"Strong as Death (Sweet as Love)" and "I Want To Hold Your Hand," which were released, top "Mimi" and "Ride Sally Ride," which weren't. But Escott is no fool either, and in retrospect these songs of mysterious origin cohere into a phonogram as desirable as Greatest Hits Volume II.

LOVE RITUAL: RARE AND UNRELEASED (1968-76) includes rare and previously unreleased material from 1968-1976. As a pop/R&B singer throughout the '70s, Green always produced intriguing and challenging work with producer Willie Mitchell. But by late 1974, Green's work seemed to get a little more eccentric, and he often had to contend with the breakdown of the Memphis sound as well as his own changing persona. This album complies many of the odds and ends from his final four '70s albums with Mitchell

This collection of rare and previously unreleased recordings from 1968-1976 by Al Green was originally released on a UK label in 1988, but thankfully Fat Possum has reissued this fantastic collection of music. There may not be any of the great singer's famous hits on here, but it's nonetheless an essential purchase for Al Green fans. As the liner notes say, none of these "abandoned songs" are substandard ones. Instead, these tracks simply "did not fit the feel of the album for which they were intended" and ended up being shelved. But taken as a whole these songs are a joy to listen to, and for All Green fans to discover. The opening track, "Love Ritual (Bwana Mix)" is described as "one of the most energized performances of his career" in the liner notes.
