Kenton's West Side Story is an album by Stan Kenton that won the Grammy Award in 1962 for Best Jazz Performance – Large Group (Instrumental). The album was recorded in 1961 and released quickly to take advantage of the movie premiere of the musical West Side Story. Kenton won his first Grammy Award. He won again the next year in the same category. Kenton's West Side Story peaked at No. 16 on the Billboard magazine album chart.

In 1992, AIDS Project Los Angeles staged an all-star benefit concert in which contemporary artists performed songs from West Side Story. It was a cute one-shot idea and well-received (especially with such inspired choices as having Little Richard sing "I Feel Pretty"). That should have been the end of it, but several years later, producer David Pack organized this recorded version, and the cute idea has become a multi-artist embarrassment.

In 1963 alone, there were 10 instrumentals that crashed the Top 10, from the Chantays’ surf -guitar classic Pipeline to the easy listening sounds of More by Kai Winding and His Orchestra. But in recent years, the form has pretty much disappeared from the airwaves. But instrumentals sure were a lot of fun, partly because half the time you had no idea what the song was called.
