Aaliyah is the self-titled third and final studio album by American R&B singer Aaliyah. It was released on July 7, 2001, by Blackground Records and Virgin Records America. Aaliyah started to work on the album in 1998, but rescheduled its recording around her developing film career. She resumed recording in 2000 at Sing Sing Studios in Australia, where she shot her role for the 2002 film Queen of the Damned during the day and recorded songs at night

Within a few months, the album proved Aaliyah's breakthrough and a major milestone in the careers of Missy Elliott and Timbaland. It was certified double Platinum on June 16, 1997. The album was also certified Gold by the Canadian recording industry for shipments of 50,000 copies  . In 2004, the album was re-released in Germany with altered artwork, and again in 2006. The disc is copy-protected, and therefore will not show up when placed in some PCs, but it will show up when inserted into a Mac, and it will play in most CD players.

Aaliyah is the third and final studio album recorded by the late R&B singer Aaliyah Dana Haughton. It was recorded between 1998-March, 2001 before finally being released July 7, 2001; just under two months before the songstress passed away. This album incorporates multiple styles of hip-hop, neo-soul, R&B, and a kiss of pop. It’s songs touch upon different stages of relationships, seeming to focus, however, on the cons rather than the pros. There is just the right amount of sass, masked behind Aaliyah’s soft (yet strong) vocals.
