The song was a major hit, peaking at number two on Billboard magazine's Hot R&B Sides chart and number eight on its Hot 100 chart. Johnny B. Chuck Berry initially wrote "Johnny B. Goode" as a tribute to his pianist Johnnie Johnson. Johnson played on many other recordings by Berry, but Lafayette Leake played the piano on this song. Though, the song is partly autobiographical, as the main character is Chuck Berry himself, as he revealed to Rolling Stone in 1972. The original words, of course, 'That little colored boy could play. I changed it to 'country boy' - or else it wouldn't get on the radio. More details were changed: Berry was from St. Louis, while Johnny is from Louisiana. Chuck Berry also titled his 1969 studio album "Concerto in 'B Goode'". The song spent 15 weeks on the American charts, though it didn't rise higher the 8th position. In 1977, NASA sent a copy of the song on the Voyager space probe as a representation of the best in American culture.
