Jan Dismas Zelenka (16 October 1679 – 23 December 1745), baptised Jan Lukáš Zelenka and also known as Johann Dismas Zelenka or Johannes Lucas Ignatius Dismas Zelenka, was a Czech composer and musician of the Baroque period. His music is admired for its harmonic inventiveness and counterpoint. Zelenka was raised in Central Bohemia, educated in Prague and Vienna, and spent his professional life in Dresden.

Each new recording of works by Czech Baroque composer Jan Dismas Zelenka seems to unveil new wonders. The Missa votiva, BWV 18, dating from 1739 and composed in the major operatic center of Dresden, is a substantial work, clocking in at almost 70 minutes.
The Dresden court attracted many foreign musicians under Heinrich Schütz, who developed a chapel of international repute during his long term of office as court Capellmeister from 1617 to 1672. In 1710, he moved to Dresden, where he became principal double-bass player of the Dresden court orchestra. Apart from specific journies to Italy, Vienna and periodic returns to Prague, Zelenka would remain in Dresden for the rest of his life. 1723 was a particularly significant year for Zelenka. In this year the coronation took place in Prague of the Emperor Charles VI, for which occasion the Jesuits had commissioned Zelenka to compose suitably festive music. Monarchs and princes from all the surrounding territories converged on Prague for the occasion, bringing their retinues and orchestras with them.
