Across the Dark is the fourth full-length studio album by the Finnish melodic death metal band Insomnium. It was released on 7 September 2009 on Candlelight Records. The album features Jules Näveri from Profane Omen and Enemy of the Sun as guest vocalist and Aleksi Munter from Swallow the Sun as guest keyboardist. The album was chosen as "Album of the month September, 2009" by German online magazine Metal 1. The song "Weighed down with Sorrow" is dedicated to Miika Tenkula.

I thought that Insomnium would struggle to surpass ‘Above the Weeping World’, but this album is certainly a worthy successor. It continues a line of impressive albums from these guys, and with every release they become stronger, more inventive and more essential. Hopefully ‘Across the Dark’ will allow them to be named up there as one of the best Finnish exports for a long time.

But Insomnium breaks the melodic death metal mold and has created an album I have listened to over a hundred times, and will probably listen to another hundred times before I have to finally put it down for a while. While I enjoyed their previous albums, particularly "Since the Day It All Came Down," "Across the Dark" blows them all out of the water with a few subtle changes. One, they have more sung passages that complement the usual growls. Second, the acoustic or otherwise quieter passages are far more interesting than previously.
