A carousel scene from a black and white movie has been at the edge of my mind as I listen to the new Focus Group album. At first I thought it was from Bunny Lake Is Missing, but then I realized there is no carousel scene in that film, in one of those slippages of televisual memory explored to such great effect by Ghost Box artists in recent years. The demented fun that kid having is a lot like the fun of listening to The Elektrik Karousel. The imaginary carny ride we are taken through joyously and deliberately spins off its axis at times. With its off-piste rhythms and telescoped half melodies, this magpie music appears to fall apart and come together all at once, a quality Focus Group's Julian House has described as being a key element of Ennio Morricone's little-known free noise experiment Il Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza.

Still, it feels like the vision of one man: Julian House has shed many of his previous horror leanings here, bringing the folkier side of the Focus Group into tighter view. Elektrik Karousel works in the opposite direction, strengthening House's position in a field in which he's mostly alone. The styling of titles like "Kinky Korner Klub" and "The Kool Kranium" bring Kenneth Anger's Kustom Kar Kommandos to mind, but the mood throughout is more wistful autumnal picnic than it is occultist dinner party at the Dakota.

The Focus Group is a project of experimental electronic musician and graphic designer Julian House. The Focus Group's sound is a blend of influences ranging from old library music sounds produced in the 1970s, 1960s-inspired pastiches, public information films, and soundtracks to 1970s films and programmes, as well as the sound collage of musique concrète.

The album possesses a hazy psychedelic vibe- sounding like a sleepy dj shadow with hammer era horror films meeting Broadcast in an opium de. .This release has elements of boards of Canada and ofcourse the hauntology sound and to my ears holds up for a great way to kill an hour or so- def a "headphone" experience- harpsichords- jazz drum shuffles- odd vocal samples- haunting analog electronics all thrown together quite uniquely.
