If I was stuck on an island and I had to choose only one Detroit collection this would be the one. The sound is really deep and sometimes introvert but never over the line - Always with focus and direction. Of course Drexciyas, Claude Young and the rest have contributed with amazingly beautiful tracks but Kevin Saunderson sums it up with the the sample "on the move!" Omega87: If you have an album that beats this one I would love to hear it! Reply Notify me 1 Helpful.

Prominent Detroit techno artists include Juan Atkins, Eddie Fowlkes, Derrick May, Jeff Mills, Kevin Saunderson, Blake Baxter, Drexciya and Mike Banks  . "Various - Techno! A good techno album, much like a good man or woman, is hard to find. That it’s difficult to translate dance music into the realm of the full-length is undeniable, but the truth is that techno isn’t like most dance music. To paraphrase Derrick May, the beats are an afterthought. Guidance is a love letter to Detroit, not least the work of second wave figurehead and shoe enthusiast Carl Craig, whose remix of ‘Better Nation’ is included on the album.

Have to agree with memepool below, on release, this was a disappointing offering, and it's telling, that at the time, the only thing that stood out, in terms of sounding fresh for 96, was the Juan Atkins/4 Hero track, it was a pretty average compilation in terms of overall quality, but keep this in context, Detroit techno was a decade old when this appeared, a lot of people were expecting it to raise the bar, instead, it sounded dated. Having said that, it's not really that bad at all now: 86, 96, 06, 2016, much of a muchness these days.

Epic compilation comprising some of the well known and some lesser known producers from the first few waves of Detroit techno. Standout track for me is 'Zephyr' which is a work of art; a lovely melancholy and touching piece of music that moves the body just as well as it moves the soul. Also worth mentioning are the tracks by Anthony Shakir (which you can't hear online) and Stacy Pullen, which for me both really encapsulate the classic Detroit techno sound. Alan Oldham's offering is an inoffensive yet engaging bleep track, and the two cuts from the man who I understand is behind the compilation are also both great; particularly TMF 61 which to me almost sounds like Pender Street Steppers and James Stinson had a lovechild who spent more time in the D' than British Colombia. Finally, I can't really do 'Davey Jones Locker' any justice compared to what the person before me has said (but it really is that good), and the track from Kevin Saunderson is a beast, which to my ears contains a couple of elements that jump up producers in the 00s would go on to borrow from.Prices for this have stayed fairly low (until now) perhaps helped by the shoddy craftsmanship of the boxes that house this compilation, which, judging by the listings I've seen, seem to have fallen apart for the majority of owners over the last two decades.

Useless fact: The titles of Eddies tracks are the initials and birth years of his two sisters. I seem to remember reading in a music mag back when this came out that it wasn't overly well received & something along the lines of Eddie deliberately choosing relatively "boring" minimal tracks from the bigger names of Detroit as well as including not one but two of his own tracks (which are both dope by the way) which probably didn't help this rumour neither.I love Eddies music but I remember him being slightly prickly at the time depending on what mood he was in and he was fairly demanding on the poor bastard who was unlucky enough to be his assistant during a tour. But his music to me beat a lot of the bigger Detroit heads for turning out dope tracks with more consistency. That said there is a heap of great tracks from some of the lesser known locals that are worth getting this comp for.

Full of amazing tunes... Wiggin', 8th Wonder and Zephyr in particular are unbelievably good! Blew my mind back in the day, and have aged pretty well, too
Steelcaster
Contains the best track ever made by Drexciya…

This sounds much better now than it did then. I mean,, compared with the records that were coming out in the run-up to this comp (Humana, Model 500, Dan Bell and 7th City) I was a bit disappointed. I bought it anyway because of the Drexiciya, Claude Young and Surburban Knight tracks. Coming back to it now the KT-19941, Shake and Eddie Folks tracks shout DETROIT in my face. It's a great comp of mellower, more emotional techno. Vote 'Like'.

I totally agree, I just put this on to check the quality before listing it for sale but I've had that KT-19941 track on constant rotation. I really didn't like this much when I bought it and its only been played once or twice, I've been missing a genuinely fantastic track here.

I beg to differ. If I was stuck on an island and I had to choose only one Detroit collection this would be the one. There really is no other way to say this, than to just say it. Davey Jones Locker makes this ESSENTIAL. I've actually gone through three boxes shoving them in and out of record boxes over the years, seriously. Drexciya knocked it out of the actual breathable atmosphere with this one, and straight down to the bottom of the Atlantic freaking Ocean. Far deeper than the experts can fathom, let alone visit without suffocating. You wanna make a statement at the start of your set that says to the gathered crowd, You'll all soon be lying on the dance floor, annihilated. Then you play them this Drexciyan Sea Bomb. Guaranteed to get them all, eventually. Eventually everyone gets bit and switches to Drexciyan time when submerged underwater with this sonic sea-monster for long enough. Add to this Shakir's planet patrolling pirate ship. 365 Blacks blame games. Eddies two gorgeous ladies. Kevin's dance floor killer. 4Heros amazing fortune and Blake's emotional bombshell, this really is very nearly perfect, but mainly it really is thanks to Drexciya's Darthouven dynamite-fishing sea shanty that this must be hooked onto and reeled in, boatloads of fun for the whole family. And if Eddie hadn't forgotten Carl, Mike's, Jeff & Rob's contact details during the compiling stage of this compilation, we would have got the whole family and I would have bought many more copies and given them to the frightened and crying people not dancing next to me on the dance floor when Davey Jones Locker is dropped. For God's sake, start grooving like a Drexciyan with a plankton problem, or I will ditch your lifeless dancefloor-occupying carcass overboard to face the big-wave wrath of the Wavejumper Battalions alone without life-preservers. Sink or Swim, the choice is yours.

This came out at the peak of Techno's popularity in the UK and at that time was thought to be a fairly week cash-in compilation by React who were usually more into Nu-NRG / Hardhouse. Looks impressive enough on the strength of who is on the track listing but the tracks aren't their best on the whole so it wouldn't be top of my list. There are far more seminal compilations out there if you want a snapshot check Techno The New Dance Sound of Detroit on 10 Records, Retro Techno : Detroit Definitive on Network, Relics on Buzz...

I have to say homie, you are kind of hating on the wrong thing here. This is a great compilation with the detroit heads seal of approval. It is true, "Techno: The New Dance Sound of Detroit" is on a more old school tip and is also a great comp, but this comp really captures the groovy funky unique moment of Detroit in the mid-90's, which in my opinion was definitely a peak era for some really amazing funky smooth groovy cuts. This comp definitely belongs in the collection of anyone who digs this type of uptempo detroit housey techno. Wave 2.

This collection is a monument of Detroit Music History. It presents the most important heads for this genre from the first (atkins, reese, may) to the second and third generation. the tracks in here are without a doubt in all cases nuggets. in front eddie fowlkes, stacey pullen, kenny larkin, claude young and blake baxter (to name a few). if you do not have this in your collection try to get it or do not say you are in detroit techno.
Ynye
there may be more seminal detroit comp's but ill take the pepsi challenge there are none better from this period. mine got flogged, and ive only just recovered ten years later, now im reminded..sob, sob. mercurial collection, in fact the first time i really knew i had dropped a seriously 'sick mix' was combining kms- 'e-dancer' with bb's 'where is the love'(bb first, into kms). the drexciya trak blew my mind at the time so i agree with hypnogenic, but for me 'the art of stalkin' is the biz here- the name so fits the sound. essential for detroit heads and sickmusic lovers alike.

I am sorry but I wish to disagree, this compilation comparing to most other Detroit collections is not that good. Most tracks are average if not poor, some very good ones (AtkinsBondsBarnett...) but most are in vote 23 range. I say this as a big Detoit fan, if you wish to spend money on techno records save them for better releases!

Just like my fellow reviewer I must re-iterate that this also got me SERIOUSLY into Detroit Techno & opened my head up to Stacey Pullen, Juan Atkins,Claude Young etc etc. A very special year 1996 was for me when it comes to music & this was no exception. My faves are:8th Wonder, Zephyr,Wiggin(rmx),Art Of Stalking as well as both Eddie Flashin' Fowlkes tracks(who compiled this by the way!)...A TRUE album

My most treasured CD-set with outstanding artwork from those geniouses at designers republic and the first Detroit Techno Compilation i heard in in my life.. wonderful. Turned me on to detroit techno immediately ;)... maybe this one comes close hyperlink

here, here, as i commented on the vinyl version- this is the biz! i pepsi challenge anyone to name a better detroit compilation, and dont give me the standard, 'sound of detroit' etc. bollox. i was seriously into detroit (still am) when this descended from heaven, and it convinced me how right i was to do so. save your money for better? show me where you can get a 5 vinyl set of detroitness for about $30 ,that's better than this (or at all actually!) and ill eat my hat. i actually wear a hat to. where (exactly) is the love?
