He was successful – well-liked, too – but he wasn’t a star. All of this exposition makes From A Room: Volume 1 the most anticipated country album of the year. Set for release on May 5th, it’s Stapleton’s first new music since Traveller (although every song on the project was written pre-Traveller) with a cross-country tour to match and a companion album due out later this year. Heavily focused on blues, roots-rock and unadorned country, From A Room finds fresh life in familiar sounds, with Stapleton delivering every note in a voice that’s as burly as it is believable.
Chris Stapleton went from relative unknown to rock star in just a few short years. Many in the industry and fans who follow the independent scenes have known about him for a while, thanks to being a top songwriter for Nashville’s biggest hit-makers (and even Adele) and his work with bluegrass outfit The Steel Drivers. Stapleton though was finally given a platform he more than deserved one faithful night in November at the CMA Awards, where he electrified the crowd alongside pop superstar Justin Timberlake. Needless to say the anticipation and hype building up to his sophomore album From A Room: Volume 1 has been through the roof. For those who appreciate an artist absolutely excelling at his craft and doing what he does best, From A Room: Volume 1 is fantastic from start to finish.
Chris Stapleton From A Room: Volume 1 (Mercury Nashville). Chris Stapleton’s From A Room: Volume 1 is not in any literal sense a Willie Nelson tribute record, but at times it sure feels like one. That’s not just because Stapleton did pick a somewhat forgotten old Willie hit as the one outside song choice for this, his sophomore release, or because he has Nelson’s highly recognizable harmonica player, Mickey Raphael, tooting along at regular intervals. The album finally affords fans the chance to pick up, I Was Wrong, a slow burner Stapleton has been playing on the road for years, and a blues chaser that John Mayer would sever his best callouses for. Though he usually holds back the full-throttle melisma that could distort your speakers at any moment, Stapleton does understand when the time is right to turn I into a nine-syllable word, and this particular penance is the place for it.
Chris Stapleton toiled for nearly 15 years to become an overnight sensation. After moving to Nashville in the early 2000s, he played in a bluegrass band and co-founded a Southern rock group whose only claim to fame was opening for Zac Brown, all while writing songs for artists like Luke Bryan, Darius Rucker, Blake Shelton, and Lee Ann Womack, among others. He tried his hand at a solo career, releasing a single in 2013 that went nowhere. It sounded more like a minor reclamation project or an abbreviated career retrospective than an actual album, but with the release of From A Room Volume 2, the first collection comes more sharply into focus. Together, they reveal the full scope of his abilities, not only monetizing his vast catalog (he’s written approximately 1,000 songs) but filling in his biography for the uninitiated.
Indeed, From A Room: Volume One manages to pull off that rare trick of sounding both fresh and familiar, as dauntless as it is consoling. He takes a lot more risks in his vocals too, making these set of tracks his most powerful to date. I enjoy the quieter tracks within this album, as I find his noisier tracks to take away from what drives this album to success.
Two years to the day, Chris Stapleton returns to the country music world with his sophomore album, From a Room: Volume 1. And in terms of his career, what a difference two years makes. Back in 2015, Stapleton released Traveller to little fanfare outside of critical circles. His album release show at Mercury Lounge in New York City won enough hearts to merit some press clippings. And at the end of the week, he earned an impressive place on the country charts, moving 27,000 units. That's a ranking similar to an album from a Texas country stalwart like Cody Johnson.

Called "the year's most anticipated album" by Rolling Stone, From A Room: Volume 1 is the follow-up to Chris Stapleton's remarkable mainstream breakthrough, 2015's double Grammy-winning number one hit Traveller. Part one of a two volume set, the album was produced, like its predecessor, by busy Grammy winner Dave Cobb. Stapleton drew inspiration for the series title from RCA Studio A, the historic Nashville location where these tracks, all originals except for one cover, were recorded
