As in the case of another noted flugelhornist, Freddie Hubbard, Chuck Mangione's big-money, artistically impoverished tenure with Columbia damaged his reputation - and he has yet to fully recover. There is nothing as sublimely awful here as Chuck's embarrassing duet with a kittenish Shirley MacLaine on an earlier Columbia release; one must be grateful for that. Yet whether drifting through a listless techno/bumper ("That's Nice"), a dull love song with clichéd pop production values ("Do You Ever Think About Me"), or a title track that treads over previously.
Eyes of the Veiled Temptress.
Throughout the 1970s, Chuck Mangione was a celebrity. His purposely lightweight music was melodic pop that was upbeat, optimistic, and sometimes uplifting great music, who doesn't love the flugelhorn?! But, even better, is the title of this album. Now it ranks second in my list of all time best titles, right after Brood of the Witch Queen, which is, of course the title of a book by Sax Rohme. ho probably doesn't play sax, much less flugelhorn.
