I'm just beginning to discover the dark, moody magic of Patricia Barber, who deserves to be much better known. Her own songs are somehow audacious & understated at the same time, as is her playing & singing. and those qualities show up in this eclectic mix of standards. There's a certain wise worldiness to her style, a clarity of vision, as if she's seen it all, but still hasn't become jaded or cynical.
Chicago native and classically trained pianist Patricia Barber's sixth album is a collection of downtempo standards, perfect for a rainy day. Taking on classics like "Autumn Leaves," "I Fall in Love Too Easily," "Bye Bye Blackbird," or even "Alfie" is always a risk, but her confident vocals and interpretations eradicate any doubt that she is a master.
