Tennis is an American indie pop band from Denver, Colorado, United States, made up of husband-and-wife duo Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley. The duo formed in 2010, and released their debut album, Cape Dory, in 2011. Their second album, Young & Old, was released the following year. Their third release, Ritual in Repeat (2014), was released on Communion records. The band's fourth album, Yours Conditionally, was released in 2017.

Released March 10, 2017. Yours Conditionally Tracklist.

For their latest, Yours Conditionally, Tennis clambered back onto the boat for an ocean jaunt-from San Diego to the Sea of Cortez-and, they hoped, for artistic rejuvenation. But whether they are landlocked or bobbing at sea, Tennis remain devoted to a specific span of musical history, drawing on the beautifully rendered tunes that emerged between pop’s Wall of Sound era and the eruption of punk’s unkempt energies, give or take a few years. Despite the lyrical punch, Yours Conditionally is hamstrung by Tennis’ drums. The keys and bass on the album are unfailingly warm, but the shabby percussion is one-note, almost the work of a different band. This feels like an eyesore amid an otherwise splendid view, an indie affectation that causes the duo to fall just short of their tasteful influences. It’s a shame, because Tennis’ return to Swift Ranger furnished them with some of their best material yet.

After their third album, the slickly poppy Ritual in Repeat, Tennis did a bit of gentle rebooting. They shed a drummer, started their own label, and hit the open seas again to rekindle their songwriting flow, which had run ashore. They also took the wheel in the studio, throwing fancy producers overboard and halting the progression that saw each album they released becoming more and more slick. On Yours Conditionally, the duo of Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley aim for a much more homemade and immediate sound, similar to their debut, Cape Dory, but less bathed in reverb.

Tennis release their highly anticipated fourth full-length album, Yours Conditionally, on Mutually Detrimental via Thirty Tigers. The record was composed both on land and at sea during a five-month sailing trip through the Sea of Cortez. Upon returning, Tennis husband-and-wife team of Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore self-produced the record in a small cabin in Fraser, CO. It was mixed by Spoon's Jim Eno at Public HiFi. I was lucky enough to see Tennis live at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City recently. The mood and themes of the album resonated very well with me. There's a familiarity to it, but it's a brand new thing. Definitely doesn't sound as "beachy" as the previous albums, but definitely runs up to touch that line.
