It was adapted from Dorothy Heyward and DuBose Heyward's play Porgy, itself an adaptation of DuBose Heyward's 1925 novel of the same name. Porgy and Bess was first performed in Boston on September 30, 1935, before it moved to Broadway in New York City.

By 1984, George Gershwin's "American Folk Opera" Porgy and Bess had received many recordings of varying length and in various styles, from full-scale treatments in a classical vein to abridged versions that oriented it toward show music, jazz, and pop. A work first heard on the Broadway stage, it had been adopted by opera companies, and several of its songs had become standards with many recordings by pop singers.

Porgy and Bess is an opera, first performed in 1935, with music by George Gershwin, libretto by DuBose Heyward, and lyrics by Ira Gershwin and DuBose Heyward. It was based on DuBose Heyward's novel Porgy and subsequent play of the same title, which he co-wrote with his wife Dorothy Heyward. All three works deal with African-American life in the fictitious Catfish Row (based on the area of Cabbage Row) in Charleston, South Carolina, in the early 1920s

George Gershwin composed music for both Broadway and the classical concert hall, as well as popular songs that brought his work to an even wider public. Gershwin's compositions have been used in numerous films and on television, and many became jazz standards recorded in numerous variations. Countless singers and musicians have recorded Gershwin songs. Free scores: All sheet music compositions a-z (250) arrangements a-z (8) instrumentations.
