Upon first listen, this album seemed very disappointing. Rather than speaking in a crystal clear manner, Clouds builds upon itself and takes the listener numerous times to fully gather in all the intricacies which it produces. Tracks such as the closing piece, "There Will Be Clouds," showcase the band's ability to take a routine pop song and deconstruct it into an improvisation based on five simple notes. They thereby stretch out a three-minute song into a 14-minute extemporization.

The Ivory Coast: The quintet released The Rush of Incoming Traffic in 2000 on Big Top Records, a full two years after it had been recorded. Thus, they had a couple years of honing their songs and their shtick before defecting to Polyvinyl and releasing this sophomore effort, Clouds. Conclusions Cote D'Ivoire: a sure bet to supplant the United States as the global hegemonic power. The Ivory Coast: the outlook for this New England five-piece is not as certain. Clouds is without a doubt a solid album.

His most recent album, The Ivory Coast, took us and his piano to the sand dunes in Yuma, Arizona, where we suffered through extreme heat as we tried to hoist this heavy piano through the sand. It was fun, but challenging to put the album cover together. This video includes interviews with Kevin Burdick about the making of the album cover, video footage of Kevin’s exclusive sand dune performance of Freight Train and many of the photos from the album photo shoot  . I suppose, had we been going for realistic, the clouds would have been completely wrong for the photo montage, but we were looking for a dreamlike album cover of a place that exists only in the mind, so this fit the bill. Then it was off to the image catalogs again to find the right texture to distress the image a bit.
