The Magic Position is the third studio album by English-Irish singer-songwriter Patrick Wolf. It was released on 26 February 2007. The album features collaborations with Marianne Faithfull and Edward Larrikin of Larrikin Love as well as backing vocals by Wolf's sister Jo Apps and also bass and alto clarinet instrumentation by Derek Apps. The album was preceded by the singles "Accident & Emergency" and "Bluebells".
The Magic Position is the title song of the album, Patrick Wolf’s first attempt at an album with a wider market appeal. The song is unusually upbeat and happy for Wolf’s repertoire, especially in its original form as a pop song. Wolf has said the album is about love, this particular track focusing on the theme of love with another. The line, to live, to learn, to love in the major key is the key to the song. Songs played in the minor key sound sad while the major key is used in happy songs

Brooding, multi-talented indie prince Patrick Wolf lets a little sunshine in on his third full-length album, the undeniably catchy but highly unstable The Magic Position. Released in 2005, Wind in the Wires struck a nice balance between eerie British folk-inspired ion and general home-recorded electronic cacophony. It was a deeply personal, slightly guarded, and occasionally brutal slice of brain tissue that promised great things from the young singer/violinist.
However, The Magic Position slowly reveals itself as an album about, and possibly inspired by, fighting off depression. In Bluebells, Wolf admits to "going nowhere fast, A darker day has hold at last". Even Accident & Emergency's defiant thump of "What happens when you lose everything?, You just carry on and with a grin" has a slightly manic edge. Perhaps this is why The Magic Position sounds laboured by the end. However, it's difficult not to respond to such delirious joie de vivre.
