The Silver Tongued Devil and I is the second album by Kris Kristofferson, released in 1971 on Monument Records. Although his debut album did not sell in high quantities, Kristofferson became the hottest new songwriter in country music in the early seventies. A posthumously released version of Me and Bobby McGee by Janis Joplin topped the .

Like all the fair maidens who've laid down beside him She knew in her heart that he'd lied Nothin' that I could have said could have saved her No matter how hard that she tried 'Cos she'll offer her charms to the darkness and danger Of somethin' that she's never known And open her arms at the smile of. a stranger Who'll love her and leave her alone.

By the time Monument came to release Kristofferson's second album, The Silver Tongued Devil and I, in July 1971, he was the author of four songs that had topped the country or pop charts for others. Kristofferson himself had not yet reached the charts with a recording of his own, but his spectacular success as a songwriter made The Silver Tongued Devil and I a much-anticipated record. One consequence of this was that Monument was willing to spend more money; three of the album's songs boasted strings and another a horn section

Kris Kristofferson's 1970 debut blew country music wide open with its despairing lyrics and folk-rocky sound, and his sophomore salvo kept the ball rolling on his outlaw attitude. Be it the title track's examination of a slithering playboy, the mournful countrypolitan grace of Jody and the Kid, or Kristofferson’s husky salute to other outlaw legends on "The Pilgrim, Chapter 33," The Silver Tongued Devil and I is lined with songs that would influence folk, rock, and country for decades to come. I took myself down, to the Tally Ho Tavern. And I sat me down by a tender young maiden. Whose eyes were as dark as her hair. For somethin' unfoolish to say. That silver tongued devil just slipped from the shadows. And smilingly stole her away. I said hey, little girl, don't you know, he's the devil
