VU is an outtakes compilation album by the Velvet Underground. It was released in February 1985 by Verve Records. When the Velvet Underground moved from Verve Records (who had released their first two albums) to parent company MGM Records, they signed a two-album deal, releasing their third and eponymous album The Velvet Underground in March 1969. Later that same year there was a management change and MGM Records' new CEO, Mike Curb, was brought in to try to rescue the financially struggling label

The Velvet Underground (album). The Velvet Underground is the self-titled third studio album by American rock band the Velvet Underground. Released in March 1969, it was their first record with Doug Yule, who was a replacement for John Cale. Recorded in 1968 at TTG Studios in Hollywood, California, the album's sound-consisting largely of ballads and straightforward rock songs-marked a notable shift in style from the band's previous recordings.

Upon first release, the Velvet Underground's self-titled third album must have surprised their fans nearly as much as their first two albums shocked the few mainstream music fans who heard them. After testing the limits of how musically and thematically challenging rock could be on Velvet Underground & Nico and White Light/White Heat, this 1969 release sounded spare, quiet, and contemplative, as if the previous albums documented some manic, speed-fueled party and this was the subdued morning after.

The Velvet Underground album VU is the binding agent in a career of releases that differ so dramatically one from another as to be almost artistic reversals. VU has the dark majesty of The Velvet Underground & Nico, the neurotic strut (if not the head-wrecking dissonance) of White Light/White Heat, the tenderness and emotional insight of The Velvet Underground, and the pure pop sensibility of Loaded. In its 10 tracks, it contains refined versions of what the band did well during the four years they lasted.

The Velvet Underground was the first album released on Verve’s parent company, MGM Records. After the mild success of White Light/White Heat, the band was promoted to MGM proper and signed a two-album contract with the label. TVU had a far mellower folk-rock sound than their previous albums, a direct result of Lou Reed’s desire to make the band sound more y. Unfortunately, this effort failed. These sessions would not be released until the mid-80s as archival albums VU and Another View. The record, like all the other Velvets albums, has since gained widespread critical praise, and has been a massive influence on the later indie rock and lo-fi scenes. Groups as varied as . and The Killers count it as an inspiration.

VU isn’t the quite that eleventh commandment but a close facsimile. VU is just a fragment of a larger work, albeit an essential fragment. The tracks that comprise VU represent studio sessions between the recording of The Velvet Underground and Loaded.

Only 7 left in stock (more on the way). Seminal debut album featuring "Heroin" & "I'm Waiting For The Man".
