Sylvia Telles (Brazilian Portuguese: ; August 27, 1934 – December 17, 1966) was a Brazilian jazz samba and bossa nova singer of the 1950s and 1960s. Perhaps one of the most highly spoken of singers of the time. She was born in 1934 and she had the ambition to be a ballet dancer . Telles had just recorded her second tribute to Jobim, 1966's The Music of Mr. Jobim (or Sings the Wonderful Songs of Antonio Carlos Jobim), when she was killed in a car accident at the age of 32. Telles debuted in 1955, and covered her first Jobim tune just one year later. She also recorded with Luiz Bonfá, and produced a full LP of Jobim songs, Amor de Gente Moca. By the early '60s, she had made her first trip to America, recording . with Barney Kessel (among others) for Philips. Her husband, producer Aloysio de Oliveira, proved instrumental in her later signing to Odeon and Elenco, two labels where he worked. Sylvia Telles - USA -1961 - Full Album. She began her professional career in 1955, participating in the vaudeville Gente de bem e champanhota at the Follies Theatre in Rio de Janeiro. Also that year she recorded a 78 rpm on the Odeon label containing Amendoim torradinho (Henrique Beltrão) and Desejo (Garoto, José Vasconcelos and Luiz Cláudio). The album, which included fine orchestral accompaniment, established her as a professional singer. In 1961, she went to the United States where she recorded Silvia Telles USA, containing the outstanding songs Canção que morre no ar (Carlos Lyra and Ronaldo Bôscoli) and Manhã de Carnaval (Luis Bonfá and Antonio Maria. Jobim (or Sings the Wonderful Songs of Antonio Carlos Jobim), when she was tragically killed in a car accident.
Sylvia (or Silvia) Telles was the first female bossa nova singer, and is widely regarded as the most influential of her generation. She was Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim’s favourite vocalist and is seen as being the best interpreters of his songs. She was a huge success in her native Brazil and soon attracted the attention of the US market and with her starting to record albums with arrangers like Nelson Riddle and jazz guitarist Barney Kessel before she was killed in a car accident in 1966. This album is made up of her first record Amor De Gente Moca (Young Love); released in 1959 the album was exclusively made up of Jobim’s works with many of them being written specifically with Telles voice in mind. There’s also tunes from her Canta Para Gente EP, Amor EM Hi-Fi, Silvia and Garcia.
