For their third album Mercedes Five and Dime Moist walks a fine line between post-grunge and '90s Brit-pop. At times it is difficult to tell them apart from bands like Third Eye Blind or the Verve depending on which style David Usher is singing in. The group does a good job of mixing psychedelic effects, as is the case with "Breathe. While giving the album an edgy Beatlesque feel, the samples aren't used to overshadow the guitar so they end up coming across rather well

Mercedes 5 and Dime is the third studio album released by the Canadian alternative rock band Moist. Released in Canada in 1999 and in the United States a year later, it includes the hits "Breathe" and "Underground". The album was released with different album covers for the Canadian and United States releases. The United States version has a yellow album cover while the Canadian release's cover is dark blue. This was Moist's last studio album before their 12-year hiatus began in 2001.
Moist's debut album Silver was released in 1994 and went on to achieve four-time platinum status, selling 400,000 copies in Canada. Their sophomore album, titled Creature, was released in 1996 and also reached multi-platinum status, selling over 300,000 copies. In 1998, Usher took a year to work on his own recordings. He released his first solo album, Little Songs. Most of the album was recorded in the kitchen of David's apartment. In 1999, Moist released their third album, titled Mercedes 5 and Dime, once again achieving multi-platinum status. They followed this with a compilation album and DVD in 2001, titled Machine Punch Through: The Singles Collection, and thereafter entered a hiatus period that would last 12 years. Usher continued with his solo career, releasing his second solo album, Morning Orbit, which sold 90,000 copies.
