Symphony No. 7 in C Major, Op. 105: Un pochettino meno adagio - Vivacissimo - Adagio by Sir John Barbirolli. Alas, however, THESE performances by Sir John Barbirolli and the (What the Halle??) Halle Orchestra, while a bit dated (the sound quality will not blow you away, though they are very good when not immediately compared with more modernly recorded versions) are SO FULL of LIFE, the others, by comparison, sound like duplications of the real thing.
The Symphony No. 5 in E-flat major, Op. 82, by Jean Sibelius is a symphony in three movements. Sibelius was commissioned to write the symphony by the Finnish government in honour of his 50th birthday, 8 December 1915, which had been declared a national holiday. The symphony was originally composed in 1915; it was revised in 1916 and 1919

Allegro molto-un pochettino langamente. When Barbirolli took over the Hallé in 1943, he soon electrified Manchester’s and other audiences with his interpretation of the Second Symphony. In this Barbirolli Society compilation four of the symphonies are included. The recording of the First was made on 30 and 31 December 1957 for Pye. He had recorded it with the New York Philharmonic in April 1942 and made another Hallé recording (for EMI) in December 1966. The recording of the Second, a Barbirolli favourite, was made for LP on 18 and 19 December 1952.

Elder and the Halle have a strong track record in this repertoire. The Observer on the Halle’s performance of Sibelius’s Symphony N., 2012. Latest release in warmly received Sibelius series: Sir Mark Elder is an inspirational conductor and there aren’t too many of those around today. Playing with dramatic bite the Hallé is certainly on its finest form with this all-Sibelius disc. Excellent sound quality adds to the desirability of this release.
