However, his performances are dry, lack passion, and leave the listener with a feeling of emptiness due to a lack of energy. Beethoven is a composer whose pieces should be played with passion and energy. While this recording is technically good, it lacks those two important elements that make the works of Beethoven great. Kempff plays in a classical manner, which proves far too mellow for Beethoven. The tempos are ridiculously slow.

Yundi Li. Beethoven: Pathétique, Moonlight, Appassionata. Because Beethoven's piano sonatas have been interpreted and recorded by pianists too numerous to count, it's easy to dismiss performances that fall short of the great recordings of the past, especially any that seem addressed to a mainstream audience.

Ludwig van Beethoven wrote his 32 piano sonatas between 1795 and 1822. Although originally not intended to be a meaningful whole, as a set they compose one of the most important collections of works in the history of music. Hans von Bülow called them "The New Testament" of the piano literature (Johann Sebastian Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier being "The Old Testament").
