Home is an album by bassist Steve Swallow featuring poetry by Robert Creeley recorded in 1979 and released on the ECM label. All music by Steve Swallow and text by Robert Creeley. From "The Finger")" - 3:34 "" - 5:01.
Swallow assimilates legitimate single-string high-octave guitar leads on "Deep Tango" and "Gentle Thoughts," but sticks with traditional basslines on most of the record, and he is an unquestioned master at that. His compositional contributions are his more famous than ever melody of "Eiderdown" (a great rendition), the noir drama samba "Ladies in Mercedes" (popularized by Carla Bley), and the spirit waltz "Remember. All pieces are played with a modern luster and shine rivaling a mirror-like polished piece of chrome.
Bassist Steve Swallow is a perfect foil for Kuhn, as he can be a supportive part of the rhythm team or highly tuneful solo voice. His remarkable ability as a composer is also highlighted on To and From The Heart, as it features two of his original compositions. Drummer Joey Baron is the heartbeat of this body, as he can be a font of energy or a cool stabilizer. To and From The Heart was recorded at the illustrious Sear Sound Recording Studio in New York in September of 2017 with the assistance of producer Artie Moorhead and engineer Katsuhiko Naito. The program begins with Swallow’s Thinking.
Kuhn and bassist Steve Swallow have worked together as far back as the 1960s, when they recorded with trumpeter and flugelhornist Art Farmer, who had yet to help create the Flumpet. Joey Baron meanwhile, has played drums on four albums with Kuhn, dating as far back as 1995. The trio has To And From the Heart open with the radiant "Thinking Out Loud," an original composition by Swallow, before easing perfectly into a beautiful and instantly recognisable rendition of the now classic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory tune, "Pure Imagination.
Steve Swallow played on Kuhn’s 1974 classic Trance while Kuhn contributed to Swallow’s Home and So There in 1979 and 2005 respectively. Drummer Joey Baron has been heard with Kuhn on ECM discs including Remembering Tomorrow (ECM 1553, 1995) and the dazzling tribute disc Mostly Coltrane (ECM 2099, 2008). This new album takes a fresh look at several pieces last heard on record in Kuhn’s orchestral Promises Kept collection – Promises Kept itself, Adagio, Morning Dew and Pastorale. Kuhn’s compositions, few in number but robust and adaptable, have often lent themselves to quite.
