Look Now is the 30th studio album by singer-songwriter Elvis Costello and his band, The Imposters and was his first studio album in five years. Costello wrote and produced a large majority of the album himself, with co-production help from Sebastian Krys, a Latin Grammy Producer of the Year in 2007 and 2015. He co-wrote a new track with Carole King ("Burnt Sugar Is So Bitter") and worked with Burt Bacharach on three other songs.

Elvis Costello released 'Look Now,' his first album in five years. History repeats the old conceits, Elvis Costello sang thirty-six years ago on Imperial Bedroom, his finest hour of versatile pop mastery. That dead-end sense haunts the people he sings about on much of Look Now; they’re further down the road of life yet just as troubled because, as always, a satisfied person in an Elvis Costello feels like someone who got off at the wrong bus stop. It was something I just couldn’t understand until I slipped my finger into the band, observes the narrator on Mr. and Mrs. Hush, a punchy soul-kissed tune in which a man pleas for the simple pleasure of understanding his lover’s desires. I don’t know if I’m deep down right inside her heart or outside her door

Imposters drummer Pete Thomas cobbled a few of the demos Costello had sent into a playlist, modeling it after Dusty Springfield’s sultry 1969 classic, Dusty in Memphis. Intrigued by the sequencing, Costello began to fashion an album from these homeless tunes and stray songs, poaching from his unfinished musicals and rifling through his cupboards of compositions. Echoing Momofuku, the 2008 album that marks the last time Costello recorded with the Imposters, Look Now plays at first like a simple set of songs that eschews grand concepts for immediacy

For this 25th studio album, Look Now, eight years after the brittle Americana of National Ransom, Costello takes the 20th anniversary of his Burt Bacharach collaboration Painted From Memory as an opportunity to respark his old easy-listening flame. We’ll tell you what’s true. You can form your own view. He claims to have reconvened his backing band The Imposters to channel 1982’s edgy Imperial Bedroom, and opener Under Lime is a soulful cousin to that album’s centrepiece Man Out of Time. But Look Now is far closer to his undervalued 1983 classic Punch the Clock, when he handed his most northern soul pop songs to Madness producers Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley and had them liberally coated in the sort of brass gloss with which the duo replastered Our House.

Relationships Heartache Introspection Classy Gatherings Nighttime. Elvis Costello, Elvis Costello & the Imposters. Elvis Costello had already taken a few steps from the "angry young man" persona that dominated his first two albums by the time he began work on 1982's Imperial Bedroom, but that was the disc where his evolution from brash upsetter to gifted pop craftsman began in earnest. In 2017, Costello staged a concert tour in which he re-imagined the songs from that LP, and while that may or may not have put those tunes and their style back into his mind, 2018's Look Now certainly is an extension of the mature and literate pop songwriting that he first fully embraced in that material.

It's the first album Costello has made with The Imposters since the 2008 release of 'Momofuku' and his first new album since the acclaimed 2013 Roots collaboration, 'Wise Up Ghost'. Look Now' is an outstanding 12-strong addition to his song catalogue. Most of the titles were written solely by Elvis Costello although, 'Don't Look Now' and 'Photographs Can Lie' were co-written with Burt Bacharach, who makes a guest appearance, leading The Imposters from the piano for those two ballads

On Look Now, Costello and the Imposters are the world’s greatest pit band. That’s said knowing that it may come off as an insult to non-theater geeks, or to the contingent of fans who didn’t wait patiently all these years just to get what sound like excerpts from an unproduced Off Broadway musical. But it’s meant as a raging endorsement of Costello’s rage-free side. If you’re not a musicals guy or gal, or if you’re part of the vocal minority in the Costello fandom that thought the Painted From Memory album was a slow, overdramatic slog beaten down by too much vibrato, I’m probably not making Look Now sound like much fun. It is. The album is on the elegant side, to be sure, but it’s elegance with a distinct pulse, as the Imposters lean into soulful swing and Costello avoids the outright belting that you either loved or didn’t in the ’90s to do the most nuanced cooing and yelping of his career.
