Bill Doggett became famous as an organist, but he started out on the piano. His mother, a church pianist, introduced him to the instrument when he was nine. While still in high school, he performed with the Jimmy Gorman Band, the pit orchestra at the Nixon Grand Theater in his native Philadelphia. Bill assumed leadership of the group in 1938, but his first major exposure came when he joined Lucky Millinder's band in 1940.
