Over the summer the band put up sheet music for the song "Fresh Born" online, and invited fans to record their own version. The album was issued in the UK on October 13, 2008 via ATP Recordings.
Not that any of their albums ever logically followed each other, but in three years they've managed to custom fit Satomi Matsuzaki's screwy vocals with honest-to-god melodies (Milk Man), consistently tug at heartstrings with those melodies (The Runners Four), and then wrap that package into slick, replicable three-minute pop structures (Friend Opportunity).

But with the addition of new guitarist Ed Rodriguez, their ninth album shows Deerhoof staying weird yet hitting harder than ever. Opener "The Tears and Music of Love" is a nonstop carousel of sharp riffs, "Fresh Born" sets spidery, contracting fret spasms over a roiling funk groove, and the title track merges Afropop-inspired guitar picking with an epic sweep worthy of The Who.
