Elvis' Christmas Album. Elvis' Christmas Album. It may seem weird to call a seasonal album "essential," but along with Phil Spector's Christmas Gift for You, this is arguably the finest rock & roll Christmas album of all time. Recorded in 1957 at the height of his artistry-when he truly could be called the King of Rock & Roll-this album demonstrates Presley having a lot of vocal fun with a variety of styles, whether it's a carol ("Silent Night") or pop standard (Gene Autry's "Here Comes Santa Claus") . I like especially that they give you downloads too along with the hard copy.
Elvis's third album of 1960, this was also the first of three gospel albums that the King would complete during his career. As the decade neared its end, Elvis seemed increasingly irrelevant and out of step with the new generation, especially in the face of the Brit invasion, psychedelia and the counterculture. Determined to turn things around, Elvis decided to do an hour-long, live, televised performance, dubbed The Comeback Special. It was a resounding success. Dressed all in black leather and opening with the lines "If you're looking for trouble, then you've come to the right place," he reminded America of what they had been missing.

Elvis’s second LP for RCA in his breakout year was his best album of the fifties and one of the best in his entire career. All 12 cuts were new, and none had or ever would be released as singles by RCA. Much of Presley’s early soulful R&B feel was gone, replaced on recordings such as Long Tall Sally and Ready Teddy with the hard rockin’ sound that had become his trademark. There was a country feel, as well, in tracks like Paralyzed and When My Blue Moon Turns to Gold Again. In fact, Elvis Is Back might be the best LP release ever by Presley, especially when you consider that three blockbuster singles, Stuck on You, It’s Now or Never, and Are You Lonesome Tonight? were recorded during the same post-army recording sessions but were not among the 12 tracks on Elvis Is Back.
