These Systems Are Failing is the thirteenth studio album by American electronica musician Moby and the debut studio album by Moby & The Void Pacific Choir, a musical project formed by Moby with musicians Jamie Drake, Mindy Jones, Julie Mintz, Joel Nesvadba, Jonathan Nesvadba, and Lauren Tyler Scott. It was released on October 14, 2016 by record labels Little Idiot and Mute.

These Systems Are Failing is Moby’s most furious album in twenty years, since he neatly derailed his electronic career with the righteous punk spurt of Animal Rights back in 1996. Mission of Burma covers might have befuddled ravers ready for the E rushes of Move (You Make Me Feel So Good) and Go, but it hearkened back to Moby’s own heritage, growing up a punk in New York City in the early ’80s. In circling back to shout-along raucous punk two decades and many real estate deals later though, there’s not much grist for Moby’s mill. As long as you don’t cringe at the overused Los Angeles vocal sample and gospel turn by the Void Pacific Choir, the best balance Moby strikes is between the ’90s breakbeat and throwback acid line on bonus track Almost Loved.

These Systems Are Failing is a fiery eulogy for the future, an album that pulls sonic motifs from the iconic artist’s past to wail angry proclamations about what is likely to come. Those that first found Moby with 1999’s Play - a masterful tapestry of Delta blues vocal samples paired with downbeat, melodious electronica - may not know that three years earlier, he released Animal Rights, a punk rock album. The nine songs that make up the record, which he created himself but released under the moniker Moby & the Void Pacific Choir (a . Lawrence reference), are distinctly ’80s flavored, a series of upbeat and angry songs with few surprises and lots of fervor. Opener Hey Hey for a moment masquerades as something A-ha might’ve pegged as a Take on Me B-side before erupting into a guitar-driven cry to stay true to your dreams.

I approached this record like a four year old would approach making breakfast out of everything they like: ice-cream, the dog, their toy cars and toast. I put in everything I like: punk and post-punk and new wave and euphoric rave and yelling. The fruits of artistic compromise are rotten. These Systems Are Failing was created in Los Angeles. I moved here six years ago and it is the strangest of cities. There is so much emptiness.
