In 1986, Billy Vera became an overnight sensation when "At This Moment" reached no. 1 on the pop charts after Michael J. Fox's character danced to the song with his soon-to-be girlfriend (played by Tracy Pollan, Fox's future real-life wife) in an episode of the popular sitcom Family Ties. As is the case with most overnight sensations, though, Billy Vera and the Beaters had been a working band for a long time, having recorded "At This Moment" way back in 1981  . He has been a singer and songwriter since the 1960s, his most successful record being "At This Moment", a US number 1 hit in 1987. He continues to perform with his group Billy Vera & The Beaters, and won a Grammy Award in 2013. Vera was born in Riverside, California, and is the son of the radio and television announcer Bill McCord.
