Psyence Fiction is the debut studio album by British-American electronic music group Unkle, released on 24 August 1998 by Mo' Wax. The creation of the album was helmed by the duo of James Lavelle and DJ Shadow, with the former overseeing the album's thematic concepts and the latter handling musical composition. Psyence Fiction also features contributions from a varied cast of guest musicians recruited by Lavelle.

Psyence Fiction, which also features contributions from Beastie Boy Mike D and the Verve's Richard Ashcroft, is certainly one of the most epic and eclectic records to emerge from the electronic world this year, one that should not only further the efforts to bridge the musical segregation that exists among the hip-hop, alternative, and electronic camps but also introduce these cultures. Unkle's debut album Psyence fiction is their best album in my opinion. It's a must have classic for every trip hop collection. A load of great artists came together for this album. The Album cover is beautiful for display, great artwork. Record plays fine except for a few skips on one of the tracks.

If Psyence Fiction under the name DJ Shadow, rather than UNKLE, it would, in all likelihood, have been savaged, simply for not being Endtroducing. Lavelle could offer this aversion of public gaze. Just as importantly, he could offer his address book. Lavelle was, at the time, the owner of the world's most chic record label, MoWax. Musically, the album features all the standard DJ Shadow touches (terror-filled vocal samples, unpredictable drumming, airy, atmospheric melodies), yet seems somewhat subdued. That's probably down to the vocalists - DJ Shadow clearly isn't used to writing with other people, and taking a back seat to somebody else. The musical highlights of the album come when Shadow works on his own (UNKLE Main Theme), or when he strips it back the furthest (Rabbit In Your Headlights).
